Today in time traveling Obama news:

Conservatives are claiming that the President went back in time fourteen years, to the beginning of the Bush presidency so as to use his mind control powers to force the Census to commission a study that in 14 years will lead to the Census changing how it counts health insurance so it can “skew the numbers” to make him look good, just like the way he skewed all the polls before the last presidential election to make it look like he was going to win.  Riiiight.

"Conservatives took President Obama to task for appearing on an internet comedy show, saying Lincoln wouldn’t have done such an "unpresidential" thing. Oh but Lincoln would have, and loved it."

"Progressives have had a lot of sport recently contrasting conservative attacks on Barack Obama as a vicious law-breaking tyrant in domestic affairs with their simultaneous attacks on him as a weak, trembling figure on the world scene. How could Vladimir Putin fail to notice that Obama has struck so much fear into the hearts of his enemies at home, who are cowering in their homes awaiting assaults from IRS agents and affianced gay people? Hard to say. But conservative self-contradiction about Obama’s spine reflects a much broader and deeper ambivalence about whether they are winning or losing the great battle for America’€™s culture and political system."

On Thursday, the president will direct the Labor Department to revamp its regulations to require overtime pay for several million additional fast-food managers, loan officers, computer technicians and others whom many businesses currently classify as “executive or professional” employees to avoid paying them overtime, according to White House officials briefed on the announcement.

Mr. Obama’s decision to use his executive authority to change the nation’s overtime rules is likely to be seen as a challenge to Republicans in Congress, who have already blocked most of the president’s economic agenda and have said they intend to fight his proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour from $7.25….

The proposed new regulations would increase the number of people who qualify for overtime and continue Mr. Obama’s fight against what he says is a crisis of economic inequality in the country. Changes to the regulations will be subject to public comment before final approval by the Labor Department, and it is possible that strong opposition could cause Mr. Obama to scale back his proposal.

Cecilia Muñoz, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, said the effort was part of Mr. Obama’s pledge to help workers thrive. “We need to fix the system so folks working hard are getting compensated fairly,” she said on Tuesday evening. “That’s why we are jump-starting this effort.”

The overtime action by Mr. Obama is part of a broader election-year effort by the White House to try to convince voters that Democrats are looking out for the middle class. White House officials hope the focus on lifting workers’ pay will translate into support for Democratic congressional candidates this fall.

"Do you remember when President Bush’s political adversaries starting ragging on him during the first days after 9/11? Or during the first days of the invasion of Iraq? Me neither. Whatever you think of the holder of the presidential office, if you are actually concerned about the nation’s welfare you don’t go on TV mocking him and saying he’s weak."

"Former Vice President Dick Cheney has lambasted the Obama administration for its announcement that it will cut 8% out of the military budget and reduce standing army troop levels to the lowest…"

Ukraine and Russia

Remember how I said that there is worry the Russians might invade the Ukraine?  Russian troops are holding “surprise maneuvers” on the border with Ukraine and have their military planes on alert.  This doesn’t mean they will necessarily invade, just that they want to be ready to and to make sure people know they can at a moment’s notice.  This is why this is the wrong time for the heavy handed threats that the Republicans want us to make and why the statements from the Administration are so carefully worded.  This is a time for chess, not checkers, as it were, and the President’s light and nuanced hand on the foreign policy tiller is the right approach if we want to give the Ukrainians time to work things out for themselves instead of Putin imposing his solution.

"…and he has the backing of a top national conservative group."

Ta-Nehisi Coates - “How Black America talks to the White House.”

"If you’ve been in the media slipstream today you know the outrage and mockery directed at Tom Perkins, one of the world’s wealthiest and most successful Silicon Valley venture capitalists, for an oped he wrote in the Wall Street Journal comparing the rising critique of income inequality and "the 1%" to Kristallnacht. Just so we’re all on the same page, Kristallnacht ("the night of shattered glass") was essentially the opening act of Hitler’s Final Solution. It took place on November 9th and 10th, 1938. This claim manages simultaneously to be so logically ridiculous and morally hideous that Perkins deserves every bit of abuse he’s already receiving. But I think we’re missing the point if we see this as the gaffe of one aging, coddled jerk. Because it’s only a more extreme and preposterous version of beliefs that have become increasingly widespread in the wealthiest sectors of American society, especially since 2008 and the twin events of the global financial crisis and the election of Barack Obama."
