Syria Update. TW: Torture

So it’s looking like the Syrian government has been yanking men and boys out of the supposedly safe refugee routes out of Homs for “questioning.”  After all, why not take advantage of the “cease fire” to disappear people.  Given the government’s history of torturing children to death to punish their relatives for peaceful protests at the beginning of this, I am not sanguine about the safety of these civilians.

Ukraine Update

In the wake of an activist being released after being tortured, there is increasing concern about “disappeared” protesters.  The protesters continue to demand the government step down and new elections to be held. My best wishes to the missing and their families.

The Medieval Torture Boot used for “Foot Roasting”, 16th century
Boiling oil or water was held in this huge boot during torture. It is made of riveted iron sheet and this form of torture is sometimes called ‘foot roasting’. The boot was filled with a cold liquid and then heated with the foot inside until scalding. This may explain why the sole of this boot is so worn. The torturer could also pour boiling oil or water straight into the boot. Torture was commonly used in England during the Middle Ages and well beyond. It was considered a legitimate way of extracting information from prisoners.
