"This is the first installment of "Lady Killers," a new series. There’s something so seductive about the word “murderess.” It’s mostly that serpentine double “s” at the end that gives the word its poisonous charm. But murderesses: we’re into them. We like them clever, glamorous, powerful, and built for a compelling Hollywood biopic—everything that the average female serial killer from the past century or so is not. Statistically speaking, the murderesses of the modern world tend to fall under similar lowbrow headings: drug problems, low levels of education, pink collar jobs held between long periods of unemployment. Ukraine Update

In the wake of an activist being released after being tortured, there is increasing concern about “disappeared” protesters.  The protesters continue to demand the government step down and new elections to be held. My best wishes to the missing and their families.

The Medieval Torture Boot used for “Foot Roasting”, 16th century
Boiling oil or water was held in this huge boot during torture. It is made of riveted iron sheet and this form of torture is sometimes called ‘foot roasting’. The boot was filled with a cold liquid and then heated with the foot inside until scalding. This may explain why the sole of this boot is so worn. The torturer could also pour boiling oil or water straight into the boot. Torture was commonly used in England during the Middle Ages and well beyond. It was considered a legitimate way of extracting information from prisoners.
